| ALIENS
No sir, your
eyes don't deceive you, this is a squad based,
first person shoot-em-up on the ZX Spectrum
(probably the first one ever made, but then
again probably not). Guide Ripley and 5 other
marines around the deserted colony, splatting
aliens as you go. The game could be great fun,
if it wasn't for the fact that the aliens are
so hard to hit (and if you miss, your dead).
Still, I suppose that for the time this is a
pretty good game - just not one of my favourites.

Great little side-on adventure game, based on
the adventures of everyone's favourite drunken wife-beater. You can gamble in
the betting shop, goto the pub, and even go job hunting - just make sure you avoid
the rent man until you get some money (that's him blocking the door to the pub
in the screenshot). Download it

| Barbarian 1
and 2 Thoroughly addictive
one or two player sword-fighting game. Take on increasingly difficult opponents
using a combination of attacks and blocks, the especially skilful will be able
to pull of the overhead chop, which results in your opponents head being sliced
clean off - and the body being dragged away by a little troll fella. Next to IK+
this is the one of the best two player games that I remember owning, some of my
fondest memories from childhood involve decapitating the kid down the street,
and playing this game of course (yeah I know that wasn't funny - bite me!)

I'm sorry to say that although I did own this
game on the spectrum, I never really got into it. It was only got a PC that I
started playing it a lot - and I can honestly say that the spectrum version is
miles better. The game is a non-linear space adventure where you fly from planet
to planet, talking to aliens and trying to destroy "clones" of yourself. A game
that was way ahead of its time (I'm just sorry that I didn't have the sense to
get into it the first time around). A must for all Sci-Fi fans. Download it

Chaos - The
Battle of Wizards
*A must download*
One of the most
addictive multiplayer games I have ever played.
Battle against upto 7 other players, using magic
to create various animals and mythological creatures.
I think the best thing about this game is the
sheer simplicity of gameplay, and of course
the fact that you can play it with your friends.
There was a sequel of sorts released under the
name of "Lords of Chaos", but it was too complicated
for my liking (too hard for a dumb ten-year
old to understand).
I highly recommend this game, its just a shame
I cant find a copy of the version that I had
on the Atari ST, it had sampled sounds from
Monty Python and Red Dwarf - bloody great.
Update : FOUND IT!!!!!! WEEEEEE!!!!!

| Chaos 2 - The
Battle in the Future Okay,
so this is the one game on the site that I didn't own for the spectrum - but when
I found it I had to have a look. It's exactly the same as the original Chaos,
but with all the fantasy elements taken out and replaced by Sci-fi stuff. I'm
sorry but using spells that create C3PO just doesn't have the same appeal as casting
a Red Dragon or a Hydra, plus a lot of the creatures seem to be the product of
a strained imagination - I mean "Space-Dog", don't make me laugh (it really didn't).

| Crystal Castles
Horrendously addictive
arcade game that I used to play before I even owned a speccy (the swimming pool
that I used to go to every Saturday had it). Guide a little bear type bloke around
a multi-layered maze, avoiding the baddies as you go - think pacman in 3d and
you'll have the right idea. Only problem is that the Spectrum version isn't very
pretty when compared to the C64 and Atari releases. Download it |

Supertest 1 and 2 I think this
is the first game that I ever played on the speccy, it was either this or Gift
from the Gods. As I remember both games came bundled on a disk with my spectrum
+3, and I played it, and played it, and then my mother started playing it and
I couldn't get near the bloody game. In the game you compete in a variety of sporting
events, Sprinting, Rowing, Shooting, Ski-Jump, Diving, Tug-o-War, and a couple
of others that I cant remember off the top of my head. As with most games of the
time a lot of the events involved waggling the joystick as fast as you can, but
some did involve good timing and reflexes. Download it |
| Dan Dare 1
Fun, but hard, side scrolling shoot-em-up based
on the character from Eagle comics. The Mekon (evil little green guy with inflated
head) is planning to destroy the Earth with a huge asteroid, and only Dan Dare
can stop him. This game had a few annoying faults though, among them was the fact
that if you got caught by enemy laser fire, you where frozen on the spot - so
you couldn't move, duck or return fire =( But apart from that the game was, and
is very enjoyable. Download it |
| Dan Dare 2 An
inferior sequel but fun nonetheless, plus this time you can play as either Dan
Dare or the Mekon.
The Mekon plans to invade Earth with an army of genetically
engineered super treens. The hardest part about the game was controlling the hover-bike
that Dan is riding, you are often left fighting to fit down a narrow corridor
filled with nasty treens, but I suppose the difficulty adds to the fun... or something

| Dan Dare 3 *A
must download*This game caused
a huge stir when it was released, simply because it looked so good. The graphics
were gorgeous, the explosions erm... breathtaking, and the first time you saw
the huge Mekon your jaw just dropped (yes it did! don't question me). This time
Dan is equipped with a jet pac - so the game plays a lot like Jet Set Willy, this
also has the advantage of leaving the "down" key free, so in the game you use
that to switch between weapons. The only bad thing I can think of is that some
of the enemies seem too "cartoonish" and just don't seem to fit with the Dan Dare
theme, but apart from that the game is great.
All-in-all this is my favourite
of the three games. Download it |
| Dark Fusion Nice
little side scrolling shooter that stands out from others because of the large
range of power-ups and weapons available. Unfortunately this is one of the hardest
games I owned on the speccy, If I remember rightly I only got past the first stage
once, and then I got killed almost straight away =) Download it |
| Dizzy *A
must download*A legendary
game that spawned a lot of sequels and spin-offs. Dizzy is a platform/adventure
game hybrid where you guide a cute little egg called Dizzy (surprise surprise)
around a bright, colourful landscape dodging nasties and collecting the objects
needed to solve puzzles and progress further in the game. A fantastic and addictive
game, not too hard and not too easy and great fun.
Download it |
| Dizzy 2 (Treasure
Island) Pretty much the same
as the first dizzy but with better graphics and sound... and set on an island.
This one is a lot harder too - you only get one life and the island is filled
with traps, so you often get killed with no warning.
Not a lot more I
can say... just download it. Download it |
| Dizzy 3 (Fantasy
World) The third game in the
series, and IMHO the best of the sequels. Unlike the others you actually feel
as if your working towards some sort of end, instead of wandering around trying
to find objects to combine with other erm... objects. A well structured game that
is a lot of fun. Download it |
| Dizzy 4 (Magic
Land) I think things were starting
to wear a little thin by the time this game was released, I just don't find it
as enjoyable as the first 3 - in fact I think that the only reason I bought it
is because I had the others. Anyway, Dizzy 4 follows exactly the same formula
as the other games. This time you must rescue the rest of the yolk folk (groan)
from a spell cast upon them by the evil wizard Zax. If you like the series then
by all means download this game, you will no doubt enjoy it. Just don't expect
anything too innovative. Download it |
| Dizzy 5 (Spellbound)
Little egg dude ... blah blah ..... jump around
... blah blah ... platform game ...blah blah ... adventure elements ... blah blah
... same as rest.. blahdy blah blah... phaart! Download it |
| Dizzy 6 (Prince
of the Yolk Folk) And another
dizzy game. Jump from platform to platform, collecting the objects needed to save
the yolk folk from certain doo.... you know what, sod it, its the same as the
others but with a different story so I aint gonna bother talking about it.. If
you are a real fan of dizzy games then download it, if your not then don't - it's
as simple as that. Download it |
| Escape from
the Planet of the Robot Monsters Nice
little science fiction shoot-em-up. Run around a planet that has been invaded
by robots (robot monsters no less), attempting to rescue hostages while shooting
the crap out of hordes of tonka toy replicas (seriously, the enemies really do
look like something you used to play with as a kid). The game has a lot of great
touches, for instance if you shoot a computer that someone is working at they
start banging away at it and pulling their hair out. Also try to walk off the
edge of one of the levels, I couldn't help but laugh the first time I did it (I
am so easily amused). Its these little things that add to the whole experience,
plus they help to hide the fact that your basically repeating the same task over-and
over throughout the entire game... which can't be bad. Download it |
| Feud *A
must download*One of my faves.
You play as one of two brothers who are um... slightly pissed off at each other, so
much so that each has decided that life would be much better if the other stopped
breathing. You wander around a large map, searching for the ingredients needed
to complete certain spells. Once you've found them you take them back to your
cauldron and *hey presto* a spell lights up in the book at the bottom of the screen.
These can range from protection spells, to those that allow you to cast lightning
and throw fireballs. Then it's just a matter of finding your sibling and dishing
out some brotherly love. This game is not without its faults, the main one
being that once you use a spell, you have to go and find the ingredients all over
again, and it's so easy to forget where you got things from. It would have been
so much better if once you got a spell, you kept it for the duration of the game,
but then what the hell do I know. Still, feud is a brilliant game, and one that
i'm still playing to this day. Download it |
